Say ‘yes’, take risks, and live life on your own terms.  Well you did it! Another year, another chance at ‘change’. A perfect time to start and make yourself who you want to be. But how? How do you change? It's not easy is it? Comfort is something which we love to be in. It dominates our senses, because it dulls them. Safety within ourselves is what makes it easy to continue to ‘not’ do. I know how good it feels to put things off. To let things pile up, as that's a fantastic excuse to not start. Why should I? It's already too far gone, I’ll do it tomorrow! Putting things off was my depression comfort blanket. There was always an excuse. Till there wasn’t. Till it was finally time to start. But how? I learned that it's better to do the things which intimidate you or scare you ‘early’, preferably when you wake up. This ensures that you don’t give yourself time to dwell on all the things weighing you down. Plus you get it done and over with. And boy is it exhilarating. My ‘start’ is my morning hike. I always plan to go early. The earlier the better. Then it's just me on the trails, at my pace, dealing with my healing.  This allowed me to create a new habit. And a new habit is the start of a journey. You know what else is a morning habit? Making your bed! If that’s a new habit, it’s not yet natural or easy, hence it requires tremendous effort and will take a toll on your will power. But it needs to be done, count it as one of the first steps.  But this year, before you start on your goals, start a new habit first. It's the kickstart to your goals. And it's perhaps the hardest of the two as it requires daily commitment. Just remember one thing…You are able!! #goals #goalsetting #depressionsupport #depressionsurvivor #hike #hiking #depressionawareness #setgoals #sunset #believeinyourself #ibelieveinyou #youarenotalone #youareable #yougotthis #letsgohiking #letsdothistogether #hikibgadventures #hikemoreworryless #newyearnewyou #newyear #2022 #2022goals #behappy #behappandsmile #wanderlust #getoutsidemore #getoutside #outdoorhealing #hikingheals #healthylifestyle

My story: Depression first hit me at 9yrs old. My uncle committed suicide and I felt the pain of his loss so incredibly deeply. I thought I’d feel “sad” for a short while after he passed and then naturally and gradually get better. I got worse. The depression worsened throughout my teens and into my twenties. Finally, a doctor diagnosed me as bipolar and clinically depressed. The medications he prescribed had adverse side effects and made me suicidal. I went to a different doctor who switched medications and I saw a slightly improvement. Then I got off all medications because I thought I didn’t need them anymore. During the time I was off medications I suffered intense migraines that led to me losing the ability to speak for a week. After recovering from that, I eventually found a new doctor who prescribed medications that helped but again had extremely detrimental side effects. Weight gain, psychosis, headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness, mental fog, extreme fatigue. I dealt with all these side effects for 2 plus years to prevent suicidal thoughts. Well… eventually the medications stopped working and the suicidal thoughts came back. It was then I knew I needed to take full control of my mental health recovery and follow my gut. My gut told me I was leaving one thing out of my recovery and that one thing was the only thing that could save me. GOD. I had turned my back on God because of church hurt, anger and unforgiveness. Earlier this year I surrendered to the Lord. I surrendered my depression and anxiety to God. I prayed that God show me how to heal from trauma, a very dark past and extreme spiritual warfare. He led me to a women’s fellowship group where I met the most incredible women who too have battled anxiety and depression. He encouraged me to see a Christian therapist who understands spiritual warfare. And He urged me to focus on my physical health which seriously declined from all the medications I had been prescribed. Once I started doing those things, He told me to be of service by starting @FAITHINMENTALHEALTH ️ #depression #depressionhelp #depressionawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalillness

If you’ve been following me for a while, you will know that I love non-fiction too, especially ones that can help my mindset and improve my mental health. So, for 2022, I have sorted 2 piles of 22 books, and this is pile #2. I have a very good mixture of #selfhelp #memoir #comedy & #truecrime. So, same question as before: Have you read any of these and what did you think? #bookstack #paperback #hardback #selfhelp #personalgrowth #22booksin2022 #22in22 #nonfiction #nonfictionbooks #bookstagram #bookpile #tbr #tbrpile #newyear #bookstoread #whichhaveyouread #depressionhelp #depressionawareness

Hey You! Yes You! Come Here! 1. First of all…what the entire F*%# And yes, someone has actually said this to me before. 2. Depression and anxiety are complex illnesses that can affect a person’s mental, emotional, physical and social well being. 3. Be slow to judge. A person doesn’t wake up and decide, “You know what….I think I’ll CHOOSE to be depressed and anxious today!” Doesn’t work that way. 4. Sometimes we don’t know why either, so asking, “why are you depressed isn’t really a helpful question.” 5. Seek to understand. 6. I can’t speak for everyone with mental health illnesses but don’t walk on eggshells around me. I’ll be okay Thanks for coming to my TED Talk #depressionawareness #blackgirltherapy #blackgirlsintherapy #anxiety #anxietyawareness #mentalhealthquotes #mentalhealthhelp #mentalhealthforblackwomen #blackgirljoy #blackgirljoy #blackwomen #thursdaythought #thursdaythoughts #talkaboutmentalhealth #discussmentalhealth #mentalhealthdiscussion #supportblackwomen #mentalhealthstruggles #imnotperfect #itsokaytonotbeokay #itsokaynottobeokay #explorepage #explore

I took this photo back in June on Maui. I had the wrong camera settings and the light was quickly disappearing. The photo came out dark and gloomy. I knew there was so much I saw with my eyes that my camera failed to capture due to my poor settings. I’ve edited this on and off ever since June. Every time I go back to it I see places I can improve it. I never posted it or shared it because it’s not perfect and in my head I feel it should be, just like the way I remembered seeing it. So I’ve kept editing it on and off all this time. I leave it for a while and then I go back and see things I messed up or did wrong. I over compromised color or clarity, I missed some shadows or made areas too light or too dark. I go back in and rework it and try different things. Sometimes I want to just scrap what I’ve done and start over completely. I know we are not as simple as photographs but somehow working on the shadows and the darkness in this photo gave me some light and inspiration. After nine months of working on this photograph I’m finally willing to share it… it’s still not perfect… I could go in and start over and redo it and probably make it much better… but I am willing to accept and understand that it’s never going to be “perfect”, because there is no such thing. I think the image was even beautiful when it was dark… but with some love and some thought and work on it… it’s even more beautiful. I just had to find the beauty in the photo and slowly shed some light in the darkness. We’re all beautiful, maybe a little dark at times, but with some love and some time we can all find the light and discover comfort and acceptance in the shadows. This is dedicated to my big bro. I love you brother. ️ #instagram #instagood #instadaily #instamood #maui #mauihawaii #darkness #findinglight #findingthelight #depression #depressionawareness #depressionisreal #seekthelight #landscapephotography #landscapelovers #landscapephoto #landscapelover #landscapephotographer #landscapephotomag #landscape #landscapehunter #landscapelover #landscapecaptures #dramatic #dramaticsky #dramaticphotography #moodygrams #moody #moodyphotography #moodygram
