There’s nothing like the flavor of pesto ⁣ ⁣ I could add pesto to just about any savory dish and absolutely love it, but it’s hard to find a high quality pre-made option. Most jarred pestos contain highly refined, genetically modified inflammatory oils such as soybean, canola, and safflower, not to mention the preservatives and sometimes even sugar But let’s get real- no pre-made option tastes better than homemade!⁣ ⁣ I brought Italy to my kitchen this weekend and made my own traditional pesto (with a couple of twists) to toss with quinoa chicken salad for lunches. It was quick, easy, loaded with anti-inflammatory phytochemicals, and the taste was out of this world!⁣ ⁣ 𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬:⁣ 1 cup basil⁣ 🧄4 cloves garlic⁣ 3 Tbsp pine nuts ⁣ 1/3 cup Pecorino Romano (this is a sheep milk’s cheese, one twist, which is less inflammatory than cow’s milk but tastes like Parmesan)⁣. If dairy-free, swap this with nutritional yeast 🫒1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil (I used @thefuriesoliveoil)⁣ Truffle sea salt (another twist!) and pepper to taste⁣ ⁣ 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:⁣ Combine the dry ingredients in a food processor or blender. With the motor running, add olive oil in a slow stream until emulsified. If you don’t devour the whole thing right then and there , you can store it in an airtight container for 1 week in the refrigerator. Ugh why are we trained to believe that we can’t enjoy ourselves a little, & when we do, we need to PUNISH ourselves?! Juice cleanses can do more harm than good for your body… It’s no surprise people feel like they’re suffering on them On a juice cleanse, typically the only “food” consumption is fresh juiced fruits + veggies. Yes, fruits + veggies are great for you! BUT, fruits + veggies are CARBS & carbs by themselves are a big no-no… Yes, fruits + veggies are healthy carbs, but carbs on their own cause blood sugar dysregulation, leading to low energy, mood swings, cravings, & more! And, when you juice you remove the delicious fiber from the fruits + veggies, so there is absolutely nothing stopping them from rapidly entering your bloodstream causing a blood sugar spike, later followed by a crash. I don’t recommend juice cleanses, & certainly don’t recommend “punishing” yourself by restricting yourself from food after indulging a bit! The best things for your body after overindulging are… get back to real, whole, nutrient-dense foods (meat, poultry, eggs, fish, seafood, healthy fats, plenty of veggies, + some fruit!) this provides your body w/ nutrients to get back to functioning optimally & promotes natural detoxification. drink PLENTY of water! 1/2 your bodyweight in oz is great or at least 64oz min to hydrate & flush out any toxins. move yo’ body! sweat it out & release feel good endorphins simply by exercising. Yall, no filter cuz #why tahaha Real talk though.. All my IG homies know I be a bodybuilding buff. Been doing the damn thing for almost a decade now. Posting flattering photo here, flattering photo there on different accounts I've created and deleted over the years.. Pretty sure it was me trying to hide behind the fact that I had developed super bad gut health that came with a plethora of issues and, more often than not, even during my prime in bodybuilding, if I ate anything "bad", my stomach would hella bloat to the point of pain. And it would stay that way for what felt like ever!! I'd do my best to suck in ze belly whenever out in public and such ahaha but it was just a terrible way to live. For the longest time I just accepted it for what it was till I couldn't anymore. Never neglect your health, friends. It goes beyond just looking "good". If you don't have your health, then it starts seeping into every aspect of your life. Sometimes first physically, then mentally, and emotionally, or however order it may pertain to you. 4 THINGS I WISH I WOULD’VE KNOWN ABOUT HAVING ACID REFLUX DAILY IT’S NOT NORMAL ️ reflux is a sign of digestive dysfunction & should not be ignored The sooner you can address the root of the problem, the less severe it will become! If you tell yourself you can live with it (like I did), it can create worse issues long-term. Why wait until it’s severe to fix it? MEDS DON’T FIX IT ️ These are “band-aids” that cover up symptoms. Eventually, you become reliant on them & they stop working bc they don’t address the root of the problem. Why trade off short term relief for long-term issues? Which takes me into the next… MEDS CREATE LONG-TERM ISSUES ️ every med comes w/ side effects. While they address 1 problem, they can create new problems. For ex: acid blockers block stomach acid production which supresses acid in the esophagus, but now your stomach isn’t acidic enough to breakdown food, allowing bad bacteria to flourish. This is how leaky gut can develop along w/ food intolerances, brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, & more! Address the underlying cause! As the weight got heavier I started to wonder if I was going to be able to lift it. I recognize the negative self talk and immediately reversed my thinking. In my head I kept repeating “the heavier it gets the stronger I become. The heavier it gets, the stronger I become.” I said it over and and over until it was true. It got heavier but I got stronger. The way we talk to ourselves is so important. If you find yourself in doubt, change your thinking either to neutral (“what do I do next”) or positive (“I can do this”). Okay, so you’re ready to heal your gut… Here are 3 diet/lifestyle changes I often recommend when working to heal your gut! EAT MORE VEGGIES ️ this may SOUND easy, but truth is, most of us do not eat nearly enough veggies! The benefit? They’re high in vitamins + minerals which support optimal organ function + thus healing. Plus, if you’re not eating veggies, your plate is likely filled w/ too much of other things like excess carbs (pasta, bread, rice). High carb/unbalanced diets can cause health issues + inhibit healing. Aim for 1/2 plate veggies or 1-2 cups w/ every meal! Eat the rainbow! CUT OUT GLUTEN + DAIRY ️ this is key to healing. Why? Most people are gluten intolerant (even if you don’t have celiacs) causing gluten to create issues when ingested. Gluten is a protein, & when broken down after ingested, your immune system identifies the protein as ‘foreign invader’ + attacks, overtime leading to autoimmune disease. It also causes intestinal permeability aka ‘leaky gut’. Gluten causes the gut cells to release zonulin, which regulates intestinal permeability, breaking apart the tight junctions of your lining (more on this in another post!). A similar reaction can occur if you are lactose intolerant, which can cause symptoms of bloating, gas, diarrhea, + more MANAGE STRESS ️ “But stress never goes away!”. I hear this a lot, + it’s true! BUT, we can manage our stress response to lessen the impact on our health. Why? Stress is a top cause of digestive issues. This is bc digestion starts in the brain , so if you’re chronically stressed, your digestion will be compromised. If you’re eating while multitasking or mindlessly, your digestion will be compromised. Improving our stress management can thus improve our digestion + gut health!
