Slower tempo is challenging balance and stability, shoring up leaks in the kinetic chain. As you are doing these pay attention to how you are accomplishing the movement and what muscles are involved. Happy Washboard Wednesday! Do you want to light up your core? Try this exercise. Remember, your core is more than just your stomach and abs. Your core includes your pelvic floor, hips, and glutes. This is an exercise I haven't had in my rotation for a while, and I really struggled to maintain balance. I couldn't do as many reps as I once could do. I'm definitely putting this one back in the rotation. Start by just practicing the movement before adding weight. This is going to be a lower rep exercise due to the slower tempo and isometric hold. You will also use a lower weight for the row than you would normally use due to the slower tempo and very controlled movement. The benefits of this type of training are greater muscle group recruitment with decreased recovery time. I'm also a big fan of unilateral training because it's corrective in nature, helping identify weaknesses and muscle imbalances from side to side. When doing this type of movement with squats or other movements with slow, controlled movement patterns, correction of form can also be accomplished. This form of exercise is easy on the joints as well. Eccentric isometrics and isometric holds are a great way to train. One focus for 2022 is improving my balance and this Full Body / Lower Body focused session really challenged me in so many ways. The exercise ball, partial pistol was difficult, especially my right side. The ball adds an element of instability, and my right side is weaker with balance and strength due to a nerve impingement a few years ago. I have attempted to fix this with unilateral training in the past. Adding some other training modalities this time with eccentric isometrics to see if I can further improve this in 2022. For the Bulgarian Split Squat, do one side then the next exercise with the glute bridge on one side. Then go back to do the other side of the Bulgarian Split Squat and back to the glute bridge exercise if your arms can't hold weight for the other side consecutively. Keep your core tight with all exercises. You will really start to feel the core fatigue as you progress and get to the last few exercises. Core specific training was not needed with this type of training and intensity it created. I did 4 sets each exercise / each side. My rep range was 4 each side with the first exercise and as many as 10 reps with the other exercises. The main goal isn't quantity, but quality. Keep your form tight.
