@djpentagram and team at Pentagram Austin have developed a comprehensive identity system for @tulanearch, the highly regarded college of architecture at @tulaneu in New Orleans. The designers worked closely with @inaki.alday, who became Dean of the Tulane School of Architecture in 2018 and initiated the identity to coincide with the renovation of Richardson Memorial Hall, the 113-year-old building that houses the college. Pentagram’s charge was to develop an original identity that would differentiate the Tulane School of Architecture from the other colleges at Tulane as well as from other nationally prominent architecture programs. At the same time, there was a desire to visually acknowledge the parent institution and feel related as part of the Tulane family. The team was also asked to completely overhaul the school’s website and to design a suite of print collateral materials with the new look and feel of the rebrand. The new mark takes the form of a blue letter “T.” Half of the mark borrows from the Roman cap “T” of Tulane University’s main logotype and the other half references the contemporary art and craft of architecture. That half also recalls an old-school T-square, the drawing tool that was the basis for architectural drafting before AutoCAD. The vibrant cobalt blue of the logo references the school’s focus on the relationship between cities and waterways and further differentiates the mark from Tulane University’s mostly green identity system. The “T” icon is paired with the contemporary typeface Rigid Square by @dharmatype, which has angular letterforms that also subtly recall draftsmanship. The secondary typefaces are Freight Sans Pro and Caslon 224, which is also used in the main Tulane University brand. The contemporary side of the new mark can be customized with still or moving images of cities, buildings and waterways for a dynamic identity that adapts to fit the subject at hand. Give another C! H! E! E! R! The Emmy award-winning @netflix documentary series has returned for a second season following the 14-time @ncacheer National Champions @navarro_college_cheer. Building on their work for the first season, @emilyoberman and team have created the title sequence, end credits and other motion graphics with graceful and angular typography inspired by the poise and athleticism of the cheerleaders. The new opening titles feature both Navarro and rival team Trinity Valley performing an amazing routine that was choreographed and filmed specifically for the sequence. New this season are animated timelines that help viewers navigate the shifting storylines and time jumps of a dramatic two-year period that included the team’s newfound fame after the popularity of the show, the cancellation of the 2020 National Championships due to the pandemic, and the controversy surrounding a former team member. “Cheer” was created by @lastchanceu director Greg Whiteley and his One Potato Productions and Boardwalk Pictures. Oberman and team also designed the graphics for his “@lastchanceu: Basketball,” and the elegant use of typography across both shows provides a graphic signature for producer-director Whiteley. @djpentagram and the Pentagram Austin team have developed a comprehensive institutional and athletic identity system for @chicostate in Chico, California. Chico State is the second-oldest institution in the 23-campus California State University system, the nation’s largest public university. Founded in 1887, Chico State enrolls 17,500 students and serves as the flagship university of the “North State,” the 12-county region where the campus is located. The new identity was unveiled to the public in August by the university’s President @presidenthutchinson Unlike many schools that use the wildcat mascot as their athletic identity, Chico State is actually located in a northern, inland region of California that is native to bobcats. The Lynx rufus californicus thrives in the forests, canyons and rocky hills that surround Chico, and the species has been around since the indigenous Mechoopda and Maidu tribes inhabited the region, long before the town of Chico was established.   In 2018, a large bronze sculpture of a wildcat by artist Matthew Gray Palmer was unveiled on campus. The statue depicts a female wildcat perched on a fallen log and has become a popular gathering spot and a destination for photo-ops.   Building on this rich history, the Pentagram team, working with the office of the president and the university’s marketing and communications team, pitched the idea of CSU adopting the wildcat as the university’s new institutional identity as well as its athletic logo. Nearly half the world’s population is unable to participate in the formal financial sector. @talamobile is a global technology company that is building the world’s most accessible financial services for the traditionally underbanked. Paula Scher and team have created a new brand identity for Tala that reflects its empowering mission. The system is friendly, welcoming and accessible, built around a universal visual language of diverse shapes. The Pentagram team collaborated closely on the brand identity with Tala leadership, including Founder and CEO @shivsiroya. The company first launched in Kenya in 2014 with an easy-to-use consumer credit app that instantly underwrote and disbursed loans to people who had never had a formal credit history. Since then, over 6 million customers have used Tala to expand their businesses and reach their financial goals. The new identity coincides with several new financial products launching in Kenya, Mexico and the Philippines in 2022. The geometric shapes of the identity are inspired by local architecture in Tala’s markets and suggest the arches and doorways customers metaphorically move through everyday as Tala opens up opportunities. The shapes are part of the wordmark, where they double as contrasting uppercase “A”s. In applications, the shapes can be used as containers for images, typography and other content, or arranged and repeated in mosaic patterns that can be animated for dynamic digital contexts.
