When you decide on your art niche, a polished bio description will help you stand out from the crowd. You’re not another “artist” trying to make it big. You’re “that oil color painter” or “that Etsy talented girl selling handmade shirts”.

I’m completely serious – it’s time to flex your search engine optimization muscles to make growth possible.

With Instagram’s recent algorithm upgrades, now is the perfect time for those wanting to update their ‘Gram Hashtag strategy. Using the right, niche combination of hashtags in your posts (and Reels) will definitely expose your content to a large and targeted audience. Your chances of attracting new people interested in what you have to offer, and increasing engagement are vastly increased by the use of the RIGHT hashtags.

Protip: When you use hashtags that have nothing to do with your content, IT’S THE WORST. Someone is searching that hashtag to look up specific inspiration, and it’s a massive letdown when they tap on something and it’s about speeding up your metabolism instead of traveling to Italy. Don’t do that.

How to find the most relevant niche hashtags for your posts?

There are two smart options (actually, the second one is smarter and will save your time, but hey, NO SPOILERS).

  1. Investigate the Instagram explore page. Search for a hashtag related to your niche and tap on “top” results. Investigate the results and make notes of the hashtags each post is using.
  2. The option above is “a basic one”. It’s good, but it includes some guesswork because you don’t really know what hashtag volume is right for you, and which of the hashtags you look at are trending, and have the highest potential to boost your growth. That’s why the second option is much smarter – doing it with a hashtag research tool.

Actually, I won’t recommend a tool that’s dedicated to hashtag research, because I know investing in 5 tools can seem overwhelming. Or, let’s be real: it is overwhelming.

Fortunately, you can find all-in-one tools on the market, that have all the features included, and you don’t need a separate tool for hashtag research, a different tool for in-depth analytics (more complex and detailed than the one you have in the Instagram-in-app analytics), Reels Metrics, and your audience analysis.

Collaborate With Other Creators With the Similar Target Audience.

It’s cliche Instagram advice in a nutshell, huh, amirite? But as eye-roll-inducing as it is, there is – believe me! – a kernel of bigger truth to it.

A really great strategy for attracting your niche-specific followers is to approach another art biz and offer them a barter/an exchange. The rule is simple: you’ll post something of theirs, and – woohoo – they’ll post something of yours

If each of you includes in the caption the reasons why your followers should follow the other, you are effectively sharing (and swapping!) the most valuable audiences.

This is a hugely beneficial networking opportunity and a great way to learn from others in your chosen niche.

Protip? Make sure the accounts you approach have a similar amount of followers.

It is quite simple to use these templates. Click on the Plus icon in the upper right-hand corner of your app to access them.

Then, click Reel and swipe to the right to access the Template menu.

The following step is to select the template you want to utilize. After that, you must replace the parts that make up the template’s content with your own photographs or videos.

When you’re finished, click Next.

Before you post your Reel, you may alter or adjust any element, as well as add filters, effects, or text to make it more unique and personal! Then, simply click Next to enter a title and select a photo or cover image.

Your Reel is now complete and ready to be shared!

Can You Create Your Own Reels Templates for Others?

Sure thing, and needless to say – it’s a really smart idea.

It is also quite simple to create your own  templates for Reels. However, it is critical that the template be made within the Instagram program itself so that it may be shared with other users. Here’s how to go about it: 

  1. Click on Reel after clicking on the Plus in the upper right corner. 
  2. Choose the photos, videos, and music that best suit your needs. 
  3. Make as many changes as you need to till you get the desired result. 
  4. “Next” should be clicked. 
  5. Select a title and a cover for your Reel. 
  6. Voila! Publish and distribute it. 

Other users will be able to take the Reel as a template and recreate it as soon as it is uploaded. This means that the more unique and appealing it is, the more people will use it in their video marketing approach.

 

How to Find the Best Instagram Reels Templates

 

When viewing a Reel, check for the “use template” button in the bottom left, above their username. Select that button if that is the template you wish to use! If you don’t see the template choice, consider skimming over the audio to see if someone has already made it a template.

You’ll be able to replace clips for your own Reel on the next screen.

You can choose films from your camera roll (or photos if you wish!). When you’ve finished adding all of your footage, click the white arrow in the upper right corner. The Reel will then be generated using your material.

After that, you’ll be able to see a preview of your Reel!

If you wish to change the timing of your image or video, pick it and drag the white box around. This is more necessary for videos to pick which small clip will appear in the Reel, but it’s still useful to know! When you’re finished, click “next,” and your Reel will be ready to go.

Instagram music isn’t available in your region” can be the most annoying message you can come across while watching your favourite creator’s content. 

Some of you have never had this problem before, but you can imagine how bad the experience was or is for everyone who only sees moving images with no sound on them. 

Let me make this very clear – it’s just not great and I’m sure many of you can share your experience in the comments below. Unfortunately, a lot of you will still need to wait for this exciting feature to roll out in your region, but this month the list of the countries with access to music stickers has expanded, and that’s incredibly exciting news for so many Instagram users!

Where is the music in Instagram Stories?

Some of the countries where the music sticker has been available for quite a while now are: US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Sweden or Canada.

That’s millions of Instagram users that can now enjoy this amazing feature, fully appreciate content from their favourite creators and show off their personalities! 

This is also a sign that hopefully soon Instagram will be able to get the music license for other regions that can’t use this feature right now so… let’s keep our fingers crossed.  But right now, you’re here to create your first Instagram story with music so let’s get into it…

How to Put Music on Instagram Story 

First things first, go to your stories and decide if you’d like to add music to an image or a video from your camera roll, or create a brand new one from scratch like a boomerang, some text graphic or record something that you want to share right now. 

Once that’s done, tap the stickers button at the top of the screen and select the music sticker.

You’ll be taken to the Instagram music library, where you’ll find a lot of great songs. You can scroll through the „For you” tab with suggested songs or browse through the different genres and themes to find your perfect tune. If you have a specific song in your mind, use the search bar at the top of the screen to find an artist or a song you like. 

Once the song appears in your search results you can also tap the play icon to hear a short clip and make sure this is what you’re looking for. 

Got it?! That’s great. Now tap on the song you want to include.

How do you add music to Instagram stories?

Select a specific part of the song you want to appear in your story and adjust the length of your clip if necessary.  Clips can be up to 15s long so decide how long you want your story to be.

You can also tap and hold the screen to find the part of the lyrics you want to use.

Short, single taps on the screen or the small round text icons allow you to change the style of the lyrics. If you’re feeling a bit creative, you can also change the colour of the text to make it stand out more.

If you don’t fancy having lyrics on the screen you can completely replace them with the name of the song and an album cover which also looks quite neat. 

When you’re happy with all the adjustments done in the top right corner and there you go. Your song goes live! You can move the lyrics around, rotate or resize them like you would with any other sticker. And all you’ve got to do now is to play with the final look of your story. Make it pop with some special effects and voila – your first music story is done.

Remember to be creative with music stickers. Test different ideas, use it as part of storytelling and remember it is a fun way to engage with your community so take advantage of it.

This is an Instagram user manual that we all should read at least once to better understand the platform and protect your intellectual property.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

The most straightforward thing you can do to protect your profile from being disabled is enabling two-factor authentication. Why? To reduce the chances of your account being hacked. There are multiple dangers that go with it. Hackers can do a lot of damage to your online presence and therefore  temporarily block or even disable your account for taking actions that violate IG terms, for ex. things like sharing photos with nudity or violence in your profile. 

When they take control over your account they can even permanently delete it. But let’s not forget that hackers can steal your personal details and I’m sure you know the risk that comes with this one.

Buying Fake Followers and Likes

Buying fake followers and likes – not much to explain here, because it’s been said and advised by almost every social media expert/guru or whatever is the appropriate title. So let’s keep it short. Any mysterious jump in likes, comments or followers in your account can be recognised by Instagram as suspicious and also get your account disabled. It’s just not worth it, especially that the platform got very good at detecting these tricks.

Bot Alike Behaviours

Another thing to eliminate from your profile are bot alike behaviours – being spammy in any way can also lead to you account being disabled or temporarily blocked – and I’m sure you want to avoid neither. Things like using too many tags in your posts. The same set of hashtags in every single post. Using irrelevant hashtags. Blasting the same comment at a 100 profiles at one go. These are things you should pay attention to because they can also look suspicious on Instagram. Try to stay creative. If you comment on people’s posts make sure they are insightful and bring value. Don’t write comments with a row of emojis. Try to keep your hashtags fresh from one post to another. Don’t just copy and paste and make sure they actually specifically relate to the image or video you’re posting.

Can Instagram Ban Your Account Without Warning?

Fortunately, if that’s the case, their actions shouldn’t cause permanent damage to your account, but I’m afraid that we need to accept that they can. 

Even if you’re very careful and follow all of the Instagram guidelines, this can happen to anyone – so before you find yourself in this position, let’s go over a very short list of things to prepare in case your account gets taken down to minimize the damage.

Make Sure People Can Find You Elsewhere

That’s why remember that Instagram is only one pillar of your business. Make sure that people know that you exist beyond Instagram, and they can find you there. There are a lot of mixed emotions around the advice served  by the amazing @creators profile. They’ve given us hashtags dos and don’ts that should help us make the most of adding hashtags to our content, some of which are a sound advice, with two exceptions that has left us all scratching our heads and that is:

Use 3-5 hashtags… And topped it off with „10-20 hashtags will not help you get additional distribution”.

First and foremost, there is no magic number for hashtags. One size fits all rule doesn’t apply in this ever changing landscape.

Big and popular accounts won’t need as many hashtags as small profiles working to get their content in front of people’s eyes. They have already established their position on the platform and are more discoverable.

Hashtags are still one of the best organic tools to expand the reach of your post’s and you should not be afraid to use them.  On top of that, Instagram allows you to put 30 hashtags in your posts so if they didn’t want you to use all of them, why wouldn’t they cap it at 3 or 5?

More hashtags doesn’t always mean better results. Even if you use 15 hashtags suitable for your content, and the other half of them are completely random and misleading, they will spoil the overall result of your post.

With that said, don’t be afraid to use more than 10 or 20 hashtags as long as they are AGAIN relevant to your content.

Kate, everyone knows what hashtags are in 2022 – you might want to say. I know, I know, of course. However, not everyone knows how to use them properly. And it makes a difference! When used well, they make it possible for users to find the content they enjoy. They increase the visibility of your posts and boost your chances of attracting new followers. Unfortunately, when used the wrong way, they can negatively impact your reach, or even your credibility. The issue is more complicated than many of us think. This can’t be said enough: even the most gorgeous content in the world will become “not enough” with poorly researched (or random) hashtags. 

That’s why today I’d like to take a moment to clear up the confusion about the dilemma I’m reading about way too often these days: is it bad to repeat hashtags on Instagram? How frequently should we rotate our hashtags? Do copying and pasting hashtags work? Do you really need to come up with 30 new hashtags every time you post? Can you copy someone else’s hashtags?

Do you already know the answers? Let’s say it out loud: managing your hashtags can be a bit of a chore, as there are so many questions and very rarely straightforward answers to them. Is it a guessing game? Well, it doesn’t have to be. Luckily, you can rely on people who are living and breathing Instagram (like me, haha). Let’s go!

Is It Possible To Find New Hashtags for Every New Post? How Often Should You Change Your Hashtags? Should You Change Hashtags Every Post?

I’d say it’s much more about rotating, than changing!

I believe it’s possible to find new hashtags for every new post – but we aren’t that crazy, are we? Finding so many new hashtags for every new post can be highly time-consuming. While it might be tempting to use the same set of hashtags too often – and many of us are guilty of that, hey, finding 30 different ones every time you post is a big challenge, and you don’t need to do that. It’s totally okay to have some “core hashtags” which you repeat more often than the others. 

The thing is, you need to be willing to test new hashtags. Mix them up.

Analyze the results, and rotate old ones, as well as the ones you’ve just found. 

Do Hashtags Work When Copied? Do Copying and Pasting Hashtags Work?

You won’t like this answer, but I need to say it: it depends. Let me explain before judging!

Copying and pasting the same set of hashtags into every post is a horrible idea. First, the algorithm doesn’t like that. Your people don’t like that – because it can look spammy. And finally: your stats don’t like it, because you’re reaching the same groups of people repeatedly. That’s why you need to rotate your hashtags.

But by “it depends” I meant: on the other hand, it’s a pretty smart idea to create multiple hashtag sets that are organized by content pillars and post categories. That’s the way I do it too. And honestly, I find it the best and most practical way to organize and rotate my hashtags. And yes, they work when copied and pasted. I’ve also heard some strange rumors that content with self-written hashtags does better in terms of reach and explore page, but they simply aren’t true: you don’t have to bother, I’ve checked it myself many, many times. 

There are some simple but effective tricks you can use to create the most optimal number of hashtag lists. We’ll start off with my methods, and I’ll walk you through why it works so well for me and my profile and why it might work well for you as well. But before we do that – let’s answer some other most common questions about the hashtag rotation process!

Can You Get Banned on Instagram for Using the Same Hashtags?

You can get banned for using banned hashtags – hashtags that are on Instagram’s black list because posts using these hashtags go against Instagram’s guidelines – and yes, you can even lose your account because of them. 

When it comes to using the same hashtags – Instagram will penalize you a bit differently. When you use the same list of hashtags on each post, you risk having your profile treated as spam, which means lower reach, as your content will no longer show up in the hashtag search results. So the price is still high.

Can I Copy Someone Else’s Hashtags?

Practically: yes, you can (but only with the desktop version of the app, or using the ‘Gram in your browser), but to be honest: what for? Wouldn’t it be better to find hashtags that work for you, and your profile?

The perfect set of hashtags for any given creator varies in much the same way as the ideal meal, the perfect pair of jeans, or the perfect pair of sandals. What works really well for other creators may be totally incompatible with your content. That’s why my answer would be: don’t copy someone else’s hashtags, create and analyze your own hashtag sets.

Hashtag Research – Can You Find and Save the Best Hashtags for Later?

The protip, which can literally save you plenty of hours? Use apps and tools that make the process easier. Before you can get started with storing your hashtags for later, you need to – surprise, surprise – actually find the most relevant hashtags for your different content pillars, the ones that revolve around your niche. Fortunately, there are tools out there to help you with that. 

When it comes to me, over the past years, I’ve developed my hashtags-rotation process, and woah, it works for me.

I use one tool for both researching and storing my hashtags. And it’s incredibly intuitive, so I love the way it works. I have created multiple sets of hashtags depending on what I’m posting – I have saved them all in one place, so I can easily reach them whenever I need to (= everytime I’m preparing a new post). What’s the app you’re using, you might want to ask. Well, I’m recommending only the ones I’ve personally tested and loved, you know that. I keep all of my hashtag sets in IQ Hashtags -I store my hashtag collections there, and I update them from time to time when I find new hashtags I want to include.

The good news is, there’s no limit to the number of hashtag collections you can have – you can create as many different sets as you like, which I think can be really helpful for social media managers and marketing agencies as well. You simply create a library of reusable hashtags for future use or different profiles you take care of. 

How do I use the hashtag sets I’ve prepared? Easy peasy, to be honest. When I’m preparing a new post, I navigate to my stored collections of hashtags. I choose the one most relevant for this particular post. I copy the hashtags. And voila!

I also track my hashtags’ performance with the tool I mentioned – but we’ll discuss that much deeper in the following article, because that’s a topic worth elaborating on as well.

How are you supposed to know what areas of your account need optimization? We’ll Scooby Doo that thing. In other words, you’ll audit your profile.

What an Instagram Audit Is? Why Do You Need an Instagram Audit?

An Instagram audit is an investigation process (don’t worry, it only sounds super serious, but it really is not!). It helps you find your profile’s weak points and evaluate if it’s moving in the right direction. It helps you analyze different components that make up your profile and content strategy to determine what updates and modifications need to be made in order to grow quicker. It’s the most optimal way of increasing the effectiveness of your Instagram presence! Instagram audit is an absolute necessity and something every serious Instagram user should do every 3-4 months.

Now when you know what’s an Instagram audit and why you need it,  let’s go ahead and jump right into our checklist.

What Steps to Include in an Instagram Audit. Instagram Audit Checklist

Instagram  is a long-term game that can definitely lead to your views going up, so it’s really worth it to audit it carefully. What steps should your audit include?

  • Are you using an Instagram business account?
  • Is your Instagram handle consistent with your other social media handles? 
  • Analysis of your Instagram goals
  • Review of every single element of your Instagram account: username, BIO, link in the BIO, display name, profile picture
  • Content strategy review
  • Hashtag review and hashtag research
  • Audience review

 

The Best Place To Start Is Going Back to Your Instagram Goals

  • What were they initially?
  • Did you start your Instagram profile to boost your sales, build brand awareness or generate newsletter leads? 

Look at them very carefully and ask yourself: does my Instagram profile achieve my objectives? If the answer is no, make a note of the areas that need improvement.

The easiest way to recognize what areas of your profile aren’t delivering results is to look into several KPIs. KPI, known as Key Performance Indicator, is just a fancy marketing term for indicators of your progress towards a particular goal.

For example: if your goal is to generate more website traffic through Instagram- your KPI would be the number of clicks your website gets in your Stories and Bio. 

So if you see that there’s not much traffic coming to your website from your Instagram profile, you’ll look for any holes in your communication strategy and your profile optimization causing this problem. The next step will be to check what doesn’t work on the surface and…

Review All the Core Elements of Your Instagram Profile

Like your username, display name, profile photo, a profile description, action buttons, highlights, and overall profile aesthetic These elements are very important for two reasons.

  • One, they are the first thing people see in your profile, and most of your visitors will decide to follow your account based on the quality of the information included in each section
  • And two, Optimizing each of these elements will help you improve your chances of being discovered by users searching keywords related to your niche. In other words, your profile will be SEO-friendly.

This is what you should pay attention to rank higher in Instagram Search results: 

  • your @ handle, display name, and bio description should include keywords, so terms people use to find your business. For example, if you’re a wedding florist, you could incorporate the keyword ‚florist’ in your @handle, then add a long-tail keyword in your display name like  ‚wedding florist & stylist.’ And finally, make sure your bio description says what you do and whom you do it for with keywords like ‚Timeless wedding floral designs for the modern romantics’. 

If you optimize these three elements, your account will appear much higher in the search results. I’ve used the search term wedding florist to show you that the top results are profiles that included keywords in the @handle and display name, or just in the display name if they use a business name for their @handle. so you can see for yourself that it works. If your profile isn’t getting much traffic, this may be the part of the audit you should focus on the most.

These were the SEO elements of your bio; now, let’s review the ones that will wow your visitors and make them follow you:

  • the first thing that people see is your profile photo – if you’re a business, it will be your logo; if you run a personal brand, it should be your headshot. It needs to be good quality, big enough to be seen on mobile, and match your overall branding. If your photo is of terrible quality, it may be pushing people away.
  • Next, again, your bio – it needs to include keywords, but it also needs to sound human, show your personality, tell people why they should follow you, and what makes you different from other profiles in your niche. If you want your Instagram to drive traffic to your website, it also needs to include a link and a call to action. If you’re missing any of these elements, it may mean that your visitors need more clues on what to do in your profile. 
  • Make sure also to review your highlights – they can be a great extension for your bio with essential information about your business or your personal brand, and a fantastic eye-catcher! So if they don’t have cohesive covers that align with your brand’s visual identity and include some random insignificant stories that don’t help your audience at all, you’re not optimizing this section enough. 
  • and, finally, make sure that you’re maintaining a consistent aesthetic throughout your Instagram feed. If your grid looks like complete chaos, your audience may not be interested in connecting with a profile without a visual identity. 

Once you’ve identified any errors on the surface of your Instagram page, it’s time to dig a bit deeper and…

Look Into the Quality of Your Content

If your content doesn’t resonate with your target audience, meaning it doesn’t spark much engagement, support your goals or  reach many people, these could be the reasons why:

  • Number one is that you have no content strategy that supports your objectives – your audience should understand what you have to offer just from one look at your recent posts. They won’t scroll through your entire feed to get to know you, so you should ensure that your posts tell a consistent story and carry the main message you want people to hear and act on. 

Another thing you should look into is the quality of your content and captions. Sadly, if your photos, videos, and graphics are of poor quality, the text is invisible, the image doesn’t correspond with the caption at all, your content is probably confusing and not appealing to your audience. Same goes for captions – if they don’t address your audiences pain points, talk about what’s interesting for them not only for you, and never include calls to action, they will not generate much engagement.

Another element that might be missing in your content is…

Keywords in Captions

This information came straight from the head of Instagram and revealed that for a post to be found in Search, you should put keywords and hashtags in the caption. The algorithm uses this information to index your content so people can easily find posts related to this term.  And this way, we’ve smoothly moved to another point on our audit checklist, which is reviewing your hashtags.

Review Your Hashtags

Hashtags can help you get more eyes on your content, and they are super effective, especially for smaller accounts that just started to build their Instagram presence. There’s no magic number for hashtags. You can use as many of them as you want (up to 30), as long as you choose them wisely. 

If your insights show that you’re not getting any reach from hashtags, make sure that in your posts, you always include:

  • Hashtags specific to your content, niche, and your target audience.
  • Relevancy is the key to finding effective hashtags 

The best way to check what hashtags work for you is to track their performance. Hashtag Performance feature in the IQ Hashtags tool shows you how your posts ranked for each hashtag. You can use it to make collections of best-performing hashtags to re-use them in the future posts for better visibility and engagement. 

The final thought about hashtags is that they aren’t a magic bullet; they will improve your reach but won’t fix poor content, so don’t build your entire strategy around hashtags.

The last but not least point on our checklist is:

Auditing your Instagram audience

  • Are your followers your target audience?
  • Do you know their interests and the kind of content they enjoy the most?
  • Is your profile followed by any mass followers or bots that affect your profile’s engagement rate?

These questions are a very important part of your audit because you’re building your profile to reach a specific audience, so you shouldn’t care about vanity metrics like your followers’ count but the quality of your audience. If people who follow you don’t engage with your content, don’t buy your service or a product, you’re probably not talking to the right people.

Use your profile insights to verify your followers’ demographic – are they the right age, do they come from the right country or even a city if you’re a local business

Then you can check your posts’ insights to improve your engagement and see what posts resonated with the right audience and supported your overall goal (like increasing your website traffic). Make a list of the most popular topics and double down on this content.

Review Your Followers List and See if They Are Not Mass Followers or Bots.

Both aren’t great for your profile engagement as they are not quality followers. You’ll usually recognize bots by some dodgy-sounding usernames like @lady358_1000. There are typically many numbers involved… You can remove them from your profile as they will never engage with your content and only affect your engagement rate.

The same goes for mass followers. If an account that follows more than 2000 profiles follows you, it is unlikely that they will ever see and engage with your content since the competition is relatively high. This kind of profile usually follows everyone as they go, so since they’re not quality followers, you can say goodbye to them too. But before you do that, always make sure that they are not an engaged part of your community.

If you’d like to know more about your audience’s interests based on their activity on the platform, you should test IQ Hashtags Users Analysis tab. It will show you all the demographic data you get from Instagram insights and tell you what your followers are interested in and what hashtags and tags they use the most. This will help you create more engaging content your followers are genuinely interested in.
