ICE BATHS FOR BOXING ️ Ice baths have been a popular recovery method for athletes …. but what’s the science, what’s the optimal way to do it and when should you use them?  ️ SWIPE FOR MORE ️ THE SCIENCE The common held (and outdated) theory for taking an ice-bath is that it causes vasoconstriction, stimulates venous return and aids metabolite removal after exercise. The physiological responses to ice-baths are more complex than this and distilling the theory down to this level is not helpful at all. Still, several pieces of scientific research have investigated whether cold-water immersion can improve subjective ratings of muscle soreness. The consensus is that cold-water immersion after muscle damaging exercise does improve feelings of soreness. That is athletes feel less sore after cold water baths. OPTIMISE THE BATHS   How Cold? ️ The effect severe cold water immersion (between 5 and 10°C) on muscle soreness is unclear – some find it helpful others don’t – and athletes will struggle to tolerate this temperature. Yet, when the temperature of water increases to between 11 and 15°C there is a clear beneficial effect on the perception of muscle soreness. IMMERSION TIME The research indicates immersion times between 5 and 15 min as most beneficial. So, if the water is too cold, then tolerance time will decrease. Then you’ll be missing both the time-frame of effectiveness and the optimal temperature.  WHEN TO USE THEM You can’t just jump in an Ice Bath when you feel tired or sore… but you need to be mindful and strategic! There has been research that suggest that strength training adaptations are blunted if cold water immersion is used frequently. So they might actually be doing more harm than good because strength gains are likely slowed by the use of cold water immersion. STRENGTH & POWER EXERCISES TO IMPROVE YOUR HOOK The hook is one of the most punishing punches in boxing if the timing is correct and enough force is generated from the ground, transmitted through core rotation and transferred to the first. To improve punch power in general we use an array of strength training methods including max strength, strength speed and speed strength as well as plyometrics and core training. We can make our training slightly more specific to the hook by loading the hip and lateral trunk stabilisers in a rotational manner and forcing them to redirect this force explosively, similar to the booking action. Great drill for lateral movement, the medicine ball creates a rotational torque that challenges control of the lateral shift of the hips - which increases demand on the glute med and lateral stabilisers of the core. ⁣ ⁣ COACHING CUES⁣ ⁣ - Start on one leg slightly flexed and a light medicine ball (1-3 kg) to the side of the hip of the standing leg. Push through your heel to extend leg and hop to the side. ⁣ ⁣ - Land softly onto the heels, pushing the hips back and knee aligned with the foot whilst transferring the ball to the opposite hip. ⁣ ⁣ - Control the landing, but quickly transition into the next repetition⁣ ⁣ #Boxing #boxingscience #boxingtraining #mma #ufc #combatsports #strengthandconditioning
